Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Written by Cassandra Cherry, Founder of The Ark of Noah
In 1981, The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) declared a National Day of Unity on the first Monday in October, as a way, to connect survivors and those working relentlessly to end violence against women and children. One day of unity, led to the full month of October being officially recognized in 1987, as Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). Associated with DVAM is the color purple, which was one of the colors, utilized during the women’s suffrage movement. For many, purple also represents royalty. Today, people across the globe participate in DVAM, paying homage to those who lost their lives, survivors, and taking action to affect change. This year, The Ark of Noah (TAoN) is joining the call to action and asking our supporters to do just #1thing.
Call to Action
Raise Awareness
Join TAoN each and every Friday during the month of October in wearing purple. Grab that purple bracelet, scarf, or even socks count! Be sure to take a photo and hashtag #1Thing #TheArkofNoah #DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth on your social media.
Volunteer
Find a local DV shelter in your area. Many domestic violence shelters are always in need of volunteers. There are various ways to search for shelters local to you. To help you get started, I’ve provided a search tool here. Go directly to their website or call them directly and find out how you can help. You can also reach out to us here at TAoN for current volunteer needs.
Donate
Join us in supporting a local Domestic Violence shelter by purchasing items that are of immediate need during the pandemic. You can locate our wish list at Amazon Smiles or by using our direct link.
Your involvement is what matters most. Do just #1Thing this October to help us in the fight to end domestic violence.
